Dr. Blues Local Reviews 3/21/11

Time Runs Faster-Motu     2011

Nothing if not prolific, LI’s answer to Tom Waits and Muddy Waters specializes in film noire slices of life done tasteful, visual and deep. This release has been burnished by a stellar group of LI’s best session bluesmen along with Motu’s insightful and erudite visions of the world. You see the world via his vocalizations, virtuoso instrumentalisms and old soul feeling. Easily the bluesiest release from a man for whom life is a palette, the slow soulful groove of Time Runs Faster is a joyful break from hyper-fast guitar bands who think they are saying something. To that soul pomade is the deep wail of Rocket’s harp, jaunty bop of Key’s boogie piano, the king of LI slide artists Kerry Kearney and Adam Tese’s smooth sax. From the opening “Stumble and Fall” to Mr. Dixon’s “Love To You” to the deep swamp of “Soul of the Bayou”, Motu rages with pure blue. Dee Chetta’s warm harmonies add sweet bourbon to “Drowning In Whiskey” and Hot Tuna’s “Hesitation Blues” is soft and swinging with Dr. M’s Louis Armstrong growl aptly used. Closing with a Delta blueI’m A King Bee” Motu has turned, IMHO, his finest release. Given his fecundity, creativity and energy, this is very high praise. Doc Blues highly recommends this platter of silver blue and truth.
